Oh, the idea of frost sounds so nice this morning. We've had such a long, hot

summer here in San Antonio.

Yes, about 3 days ago. Tomatoes all hit but continuing to ripen some.

Need to get them brought in today, hang parts, & puree the ripe ones for

freezing.

Here in SW Missouri, we've had one very light frost just a few days ago.

Since then though, the temperatures have warmed up again with still no

rain - and the folklore signs pointing to a hard winter.

I live on Short Mountain in middle Tennessee (the highest elevation in

Cannon County) and we got our first frost last night. The lower areas got

some frost last week.

It was just a light one and a "high" one ...got the last of the basil and

pineapple sage and the tops of the tomatoes. Most everything else is o.K.

It's a bit earyly for us... usually keep tomatoes and such without covering

at least until Halloween. Some years much longer.

I get a bit down for awhile when the garden goes at last. Then the seed

catalogs start to arrive and I perk up. But this year I think I'll be too

busy to be blue... I have alot of projects in process and a hen who just

hatched a clutch of 16.... and it's her third clutch this year... She

doesn't seem to have enough sense to take a break between batchs, but she

takes good care of them...

Here in California the evenings are in the low 70's and 60's. I think it

is a long time away for us. Days in the 90's still. It is still summer

here. It has been a bit warm for this time of the year, but I can't

complain since we had such a glorious summer with temps in the 80's. I am

still pulling alot of weeds. About 4 hours worth today.

When I get frustrated with weeds I remember a saying I read when I was young.

It was something like, "A weed is a plant whose use just hasn't been found

yet".

We've been in the low 20's here in SW Missouri this week. Finished off the

comfrey, costmary, tansy etc are black. It's been a strange time....not a

it's cold at night the days are still in the 70's. Beginning to wonder if

Personally, I use little less then an oz. I love how it smells up the house.

And you can find reasonably priced Eucalyptus EO. I think I paid under 15.00

for 16 oz's last time I ordered it.

The article below states 4 parts Eucalyptus to 1 part detergent.

Washing With Eucalyptus Oil Rids Bedding Of Asthma-Provoking Mites

WESTPORT, Nov 5 (Reuters) - Eucalyptus oil added to detergent kills

almost all house dust mites during machine washing of blankets,

report Australian researchers in the October issue of the Journal of

Asthma and Clinical Immunology.

Dr. Euan R. Tovey, of the University of Sydney, and colleagues note

that 95% of mite allergen can be removed from fabrics by cold or warm

water laundering. However, most mites survive. Eradication would

likely slow allergen build-up, but high temperatures or laboratory

detergents are generally required for effective extermination.

The researchers compared live mite recovery from blankets washed in

warm water containing dishwashing detergent, with or without

eucalyptus oil. Four parts eucalyptus oil were emulsified with one

part of a specific concentrated detergent. Only 0.6% of mites

survived the eucalyptus treatment, whereas 97.6% were still alive

after exposure to detergent alone.

By using readily-available eucalyptus oil, the team conclude, "...it

is possible to make a simple, effective laundry acaricidal wash that

eliminates the need for very hot water and that may maintain low

allergen levels in bedding for longer than normal laundering alone."

Hi, it's frosted here and

We're about done with the growing season in Western Indiana . It's

been wonderful this week tho, and the trees are aglow, it's definately

at it's peak.

Does anyone have knowledge of soap making sites? I bought some

wonderful soap at the local covered bridge festival a few weeks ago,

and I've been using it, and love it. The problem is I didn't get the

vendors' card or way to buy more. What a shame. it has no animal fat

in it, all vegetable. I'd really appreciate a site or recipes.

Thanks,

Dee|

Hi Dee,

Handmade vegetable soaps are wonderful. I have been making soap for about

three years now and sell it in a local gift store and at parties. Anyway, it

is a very enjoyable enterprise. It is pretty involved and takes a lot of

trial and error to learn. However, if you are interested in trying your hand

at it there are lists that you can join on the www. Try going to

RainbowMeadow.com and that should get you started.

--------

Posted To HerbInfo By: diane downs <rdowns@ix.netcom.com>

in looking for this herb i found the information awhile back and don't

know who to give credit too

GOAT'S RUE

                            Galega officinalis

          Family: Leguminosae

Names: Italian Fitch; Herba ruta caprariae; (German)

Pestilenzkraut; French

          lilac.

Description: Native to Asia and continental Europe, goat's rue

grows in damp

and low-lying areas. From the several-headed root, rise erect

stems, about 3

feet high, smooth and branched, bearing pinnate leaves with

from six to eight

pairs of lance-shaped leaflets, 3/4 to 2 inches long, and an

odd terminal one.

The leaflets are bright green, smooth (or very slightly

hairy), on short

foot-stalks. The small lilac, purplish or white flowers are in

axillary racemes and

produce narrow, almost cylindrical pods. The plant is without

scent, unless

bruised, when it emits a disagreeable odor, whence perhaps its

name of Goat's

          Rue.

Cultivation---Being pea-like in character, its chief

requirements are deep soil

and moisture. Given these it will grow strongly each season,

producing great

masses of flowers, and will grow undisturbed for many years.

Autumn planting

is best. Rub hard-coated seed on a piece of sandstone or

between sandpaper

to scarify it. Direct seed or sow in flats in a warm place.

Transplant seedlings to

garden at 2 foot spacing. Grows and flowers to 5 feet. Grows

in zones 5 10.

Harvested in summer. The stalks with the leaves and flowers

are gathered at

the time of flowering which is between mid-summer and late

summer. Dry in

          the shade.

History: Goat's Rue, known in the old Herbals as Herba rutae

caprariae, is a

leguminous plant that in former times was much employed on

account of its

diaphoretic properties in malignant fevers and the plague,

hence one of its

German popular names of Pestilenzkraut. In the Victorian

Language of

Flowers, Goat's Rue stands for Reason. An herb of Mercury

goat's rue is used

in rituals for healing and health.

          Actions: antidiabetic, antihyperglycemic, diaphoretic,

diuretic, galactogogue,

promotes insulin production, stimulant, uterine vasodilator,

weak diuretic

          Constituents: Contains alkaloids (including galegine),

saponins, flavonoids,

          bitters and tannins.

Medicinal uses: Uses in cases of agalactia, diabetes mellitus,

hyperglycemia,

edema and fluid retention. Goat's rue is chiefly used as an

antidiabetic herb,

having the ability to reduce blood sugar levels. It is not a

substitute for

conventional treatments but can be valuable in the early

stages of late-onset

diabetes, and is best used as an infusion. The herb has the

effect of

increasing breast-milk production. It may also stimulate the

development of the

mammary glands. Has been used with some success in stimulating

milk

production in women that have not been pregnant but adopted a

child. It is

also a useful diuretic. In hot infusion goat's rue makes a

useful remedy for

increasing sweating and bringing down feversand for this

reason it was an

old remedy for the plague. For digestive problems,

especially chronic

constipation caused by lack of digestive enzymes. Fed

directly to livestock to

increase milk yield. It was also used as a remedy for worms

and recommended

as a cure for the bites of serpents. Parkinson says it is

'good for fattening hens.

Goat's rue (galega officinalis) has shown to have hypoglycemic

activity by

enhancing glucose utilization. It was researched in the early

1920's as a

possible therapy which led to the development of antidiabetic

biguanide drugs.

These drugs had numerous side effects which the whole plant

did not produce.

A study in 1961 found that galega actually regenerated

pancreatic cells.

Toxicity: Sheep have been poisoned by eating the fresh plant.

                            PREPARATIONS

Goats Rue Extract: 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon 3 times a day, as

directed by

healthcare professional. Always take with plenty of juice or

with water at

mealtime, unless instructed otherwise. As an infusion pour a

cup of boiling

water onto 1 teaspoonful of the dried leaves and flowering

tops and let infuse

for 10-15 minutes. This should be drunk twice a day.

I've dug the root of a 4 year old cone flower plant. I got about a

quart of root. My question is, how much vodka do I use for that

amount of root? Can I split it up into several quart jars, or does

one quart jar have to be full of the root? Any help is appreciated.

If you want to make a "Simpler's" tincture: chop up the root and cover with

alcohol.

If you want to do it more by the book: add 5 parts of 96 % alcohol (200 proof

everclear) to 1 part of fresh chopped-up herb.

That's, say, 1 liter (or 2 pints) to 200 g (or 1/2 a pound).

Sure, feel free to put it into pint jars.

Cheers

I don't have any suggestions for acne, I'm afraid. However, for the

occasional pimple, I have something that works for me. I soak a cotton ball

in warm salt water then press it on top of the breakout for about three

minutes to help dissolve the top. NEVER SQUEEZE OR PICK (that can cause a

scar). I then dab a bit of honey on and let sit for another 10-15 minutes.

Rinse it off with warm water.

Unfortunately, I think acne is something we all have to go through. It is a

result of hormonal changes 9 times out of 10. I've heard that over cleaning

the face can aggrevate the problem. Too much grease consumption can also make

it worse. Eating right & drinking plenty of water is the best advice I could

offer.

Hello,

Notwithstanding hormonal problems, I have had good luck with this routine:

Mix together lavender flowers, oatmeal, lemon verbena and sage in a jar.

Blend a spoonful of this mixture into about 2 spoonfuls of plain yogurt.

Put this stuff on your face and let it dry, them rinse off.

(Two weeks in advance-fill a pickle jar with lavender flowers and pour in

either Everclear or 100-proof vodka. Put this in a cool dark place and

shake daily.) Strain through cheese cloth and then a coffee filter into a

clean jar. Add about 2 cups of distilled water, and add Austrailian Tea

Tree oil, and some wintergreen oil. Shake well, and apply to your face

with a cotton ball.

The whole routine not only helps your condition, but feels great.

Hope this helps.

Margaret

Don't know if it's any help but when I fell on my hip last winter, I

made a pot of VERY strong comfrey tea which I kept warm on the

stove. Into this I dipped some old red flannel which I then applied to

said hip like a compress. I alternated this with ice packs.

Along with Arnica Gel or something like TraumHeel, and a couple

of Excedrin now and then, I did recover. I'm still here and have no ill

effects from the fall--which was a bad one. So it must have

worked...and the above really dealt with the pain when it was most

severe.

Snowowl,

Thanks for the help.

I have made Arnica, SJW, hot pepper oils, wintergreen,

everything oils and liniments. Including using pure Emu oil.

She had the hip socket removed about 6 yrs ago from a previous botched job,

she did'nt follow up with another bone specialist and sufferd the horrible

pain untill the infection came from within and did some serious damage to

where now they can't replace it.

The leg is 4 in. shorter than the other, she has Osteoperosis pretty bad.

At 83 she gets by on a walker, but complains all the time about that hip,

Nice days she does better, but we all know what winter does to older

bones......cold ,damp, that's hard on the bad shaped elderly.

I have been reading that Belladonna is used as an external pain reliever, I

just have to be sure of the amount from a Tincture, Lord!, I do'nt want to

kill her!!!

I just want her to have a little peace before her time comes, poor thing has

suffered enough.

Her general health is fair, her diet is nothing to brag about, like a kid

she is fussy about food.

Got her on vitamins, minerls, calcium, and some mild tea made with Chamomile,

mint and Kava to soothe her nerves.

I was just hoping there may be a Chemist who would be able to give me the

proper dosage to use.

Other Medica Meteria I have read were written back in the 30's and we know

more now.

I really dont know if that information is correct (The Micheal Moores Medica

site)

I heard that Acotinium Tinctures work too. This also is a dangerous herb to

use and harvesting reqires rubber gloves and bandaids on any cuts. (So does

Belladonna)

But it sounded like the Acotinium may be a little safer (?)

That is why I need someone who really knows these herbs for advice.

Thanks for your time.

Recently I was asked my opinion of what are the best culinary herbs to grow

on a windowsill for fresh use over the winter. I immediately responded that

my favorite is sweet marjoram, both for its versatility in cooking, and for

its prolific growth in the low light and less-than-ideal growing conditions

of a winter windowsill.

I've grown other herbs on the windowsill (parsley, sage, chives), but they

usually don't grow very abundantly during the winter. Garlic chives might

perform better than regular chives, but I've not tried them.

Can anyone offer some tips on windowsill herb growing for the herbs

mentioned above, or offer some more suggestions of useful herbs to grow on

the winter windowsill?

Rick,

I do all my gardening outside, but what about rosemary? It is pretty hardy

parsley and basil, of course that was years ago.

Welcome,

I work at a relatively new farm where we grow about 75 varieties of

medicinal herbs (web-site available in Jan). Some of them are Chinese

herbs that were highly recommended for us to grow, but we have a limited

knowledge of Chinese medicine, and there are quite a few that we're not

exactly sure how to handle. I look forward to talking more with you.
