I've had real good luck putting herb (lavender) in a conventional oven
at lowest temperature setting you can get. Arrange on a cookie sheet.
I put the setting knob below the 200F mark ...sometimes you might need to
turn over the plant if you have left it on a stem. When I did this it was
with blossoms
from Lavender and the chives I had chopped before drying.
This shouldn't take more than a few hours max.

I have a dehydrator, not the type with a fan. This is also great.
Does anyone have the dehydrator with the built in fan?
I got mine before they came out with the fan built in.

Does anyone have any tips on drying lavender to preserve the color and =
fragrance. I have several large lavender plants in my garden and want =
to dry some but I tried doing this last year and it lost color and =
fragrance very quickly. I just tied bundles and hung them in my garage =
to dry. Is there a better way?

  Thanks, Cara

That works. When I lived in Mississippi for several years there was an =
unused dog pen at the back of my yard - a chain link enclosure about 4 =
ft x 8 ft and I just tossed all my composting stuff in it and stirred it =
up every now and then - worked just fine.

Why worry about brand names and spending extra money to go to =
advertisers
and manufacturers and patent attorneys at all? Just build one! A =
roll of
rabbit wire, maybe tacked to uprights for more support, works just =
fine for
containment, or you may have a fence that you can build it along, and =
add
to it on one end, while sifting finished from the other. You can do =
your
own building _exactly_ the way you like it.

Just to expand a little on choices here (and recognizing that while
Bobbi is not interested in building, but in buying, a little information
is still a good thing)...

Wire composters are about the least efficient choice you have (perhaps
a step up from an uncontained pile, but not a long step). They are so
quick to dry out that the material in them can remain un-composted for
long, long times. Especially if you are not interested in actively
managing a pile, wire enclosures really do not offer you much. And if
you want the appliance, whatever it is, so look good, wire ain't going
to be it, either. Things stick out, the wire rusts, eventually it
falls to one side, and it all looks like something you wish hadn't
happened. I strongly recommend against wire compost bins.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have heard of and even seen (!) home made
compost piles of various kinds, but they are not for me, which is why I
asked about ready made compost bins. In my neighborhood, either I don't
compost at all, or I use a storebought composter.

Why worry about brand names and spending extra money to go to advertisers
and manufacturers and patent attorneys at all? Just build one! A roll of
rabbit wire, maybe tacked to uprights for more support, works just fine for
containment, or you may have a fence that you can build it along, and add
to it on one end, while sifting finished from the other. You can do your
own building _exactly_ the way you like it.

Can any of you who compost give me some brand names of good manufactured
bins and/or places that sell them? At the old house I had a Soil Saver,
which worked great, but apparently it is no longer available. I like to
make compost the slow way, so it needs to have a door at the bottom so I
can shovel the finished compost out while the unfinished compost sits on
top. I think this means the tumbler types won't work for me. But I'd be
interested in hearing what works for others.

Thanks,

Here is a web site that talks about woad.
http://www.fs.fed.us/foresthealth/technology/news/Spring97.html

I also did a search on google image to see a picture. It does have beautiful
yellow flowers. To bad it is invasive in the west.

My DNR friend says

"Woad (Isatis tinctoria) is a non-native species that is particularly
invasive in the western states. I've never heard of it being a problem in
the eastern U.S., nor have I ever seen any growing in Indiana." And he is
one who definitely would know.

So, onward with the woad-dyed Easter eggs! How primitive can I get?

Margaret, that gives me an idea. I'll ask someone I know in the DNR! They
know where every invasive weed in the state is growing. Thanks for being
such an inspiration to the group!

This post will also not be helpful to Margaret, but from what I
understand, woad really does make the best blue dye. Apparently one should
not GROW it, as it is a noxious weed in much of the US, but it can be
harvested from plants that have escaped into the wild--IF one can identify
it. There are so many yellow daisy-like plants; the composite familiy is
huge. Are there escaped populations in the Midwest? Does anyone have any
tips for ID'ing and collecting woad for dying?

I write a garden column, encouraging new gardeners to grow veggies, herbs
and flowers. I submitted my question with the thought that I'd write my
column on what you could grow that would dye Easter eggs. Your idea is
different, but not appropriate for my purpose. Thanks, Margaret L

I also recently saw, in a current magazine, possibly even Martha Stewart,
instructions for alternatives to dying that included cutting out pictures of
flowers from garden catalogs and then gluing them onto the egg surface sort
of like decoupage ... also gluing ribbons and things on them to dress them up
instead of dying them.

Fondly,
SaraAnneC

Martha Stewart has done this on her show before. For those interested check
her web site out for instructions.
I had never heard of dyeing eggs with onion peels before her episode ran.LOL

My fennel plants reseed fairly well. Bronze fennel is a host plant for
the black swallowtail butterfly. This is my main purpose in growing
bronze fennel aside from its beauty. No pesticides on these plants in
butterfly gardens.

Enjoy your plants.

It self-seeds quite freely. Thin seedlings with a coarse tool, a rake or
something like that. When survivors grow, thin them again and again until
you only have the number you want to keep. Margaret L

In looking over my very weedy herb garden the other day, I noted some tiny
dark-colored seedlings growing, all concentrated in one area where I had
planted 3 bronze fennel plants last year. Is this just another weed, or is
it likely to be baby fennels? I didn't know bronze fennel did this. Should
I attempt to zero in on a few with the best color, and delete the rest
(there are about 10,000 plantlets there). I love the look of this herb,
tho I don't know if it has any culinary or medicinal worth.

I'd give it a try, yes. Then there's safflower, and saffron, too, even if that
one's far too expensive for this kind of thing.

Dried onion skins give a kind of yellow, too.

> And what about actual red? How do you get that?

I'd use one of these:
- cranberry juice
- aronia berry juice (not too long, so's not to make it too purple)
- black currant juice (ditto)

Cheers

Yes. This or a similar technique was also in the SUNSET article. You use
various leaves (fern, parsley, or whatever is growing outside) of your
choice to make a design or pattern on the egg, then wrap tightly in a
piece of nylon stocking, fastening with a rubber band or some string, to
hold the leaf in place before boiling/dying it.

Hi Margaret:
I would guess this means to include the plant materials in the water you are
using to hard-boil your eggs -- rather than making a "dipping dye solution"
afterwards?

The Herb Society of Central Florida will be involved in a joint venture with
our local Pioneer Days event. I am looking for herb related vendors that will
be in the Orlando, Florida area October 19-20, 2002. It is a two day event
expecting about 20,000 people to walk through the event by the end of Sunday.
It is a great opportunity for many folks. Email me with your address if
interested. Applications will be going out in April.

against the surface of the egg. I can't remember the entire
process. I do remember that after the onion skins were wrapped
around them she wrapped them with foil and let them set but
I can't remember if she dipped them in anything. Does anyone
know what I'm talking about?

The egg finished was beautiful.

Margaret:

Unless they are considering cabbage a botanical, which I assume it is,
it's not clear what they mean.

There was an article on this subject in SUNSET magazine many years ago,
and I dyed some eggs according to their method. As I recall, in all cases
the eggs were to be boiled in water with the herbs or whatever added, not
just with the red cabbage. In other words, you don't cook the eggs first
and dye them later. It took quite a while for some colors to be achieved,
and of course the flavors of the herbs and vegetables may be absorbed into
the egg through the shell. I'm not sure they would all be good to eat
after this sort of treatment, but they were very beautiful.

I also seem to remember MARTHA STEWART LIVING having something on that
subject a few years ago.

I now buy eggs from a colleague who has an assortment of pet hens,
including Arucanas, and they come in such gorgeous colors that I feel no
need to use any dyes, natural or chemical! But come to think of it, a
yellow would be nice--for that would you use turmeric? And what about
actual red? How do you get that?

Regarding a natural source of blue dye, I have heard that Blue Ash twigs
and bark will yield this. Don't have one and never tried it, but FWIW.

Perhaps it means to cook the botanical coloring thing (in this case,
the cabbage) with the eggs instead of using the cabbage as a dye
dip after cooking? My recollection is that red cabbage makes a rather
undistinguished dye -- maybe this is a way to intensify it.

BTW, while I would sternly discourage the intentional culture of
woad, it can be acquired out of ditches and places where it has Invaded
the Landscape. Alas, for this year's Easter Eggs, you would have had
to plan ahead last year to collect your ingredients!

I sell fresh-cut herbs at a Farmer's Market. Through this market, I accept WIC (USDA operated food coupon program for Women(preg.), Infants, &Children) coupons. Last year restrictions were placed on the culinary herbs that could be purchased with WIC coupons. Only eight were on the "ok" list (basil, thyme, rosemary, chives, parsley, costmary(!?!),mint, oregano). When following up on this with our state office, I was told ...

>" ... In past years, it was our understanding that any culinary herb was allowable on the WIC FMNP program. Last year, USDA corrected that >misperception, informing us that we were required to approve specific herbs. One very important reason for doing that is that certain herbs are >contraindicated for pregnant women. ... "

I was asked to provide a list of culinary herbs, which were also safe for pregnant women and their children. So, finally, to my question! Where might I find this type of list.

Thank you for your time.

Nope, that one comes from the citrus fruit, Citrus aurantium var. bergamia.
You can make your own blend, using Monarda leaf, but while it'll taste a lot
like earl grey, it won't be the real thing.

Cheers

I was told at my Herb Guild meeting last night that the wild bee balm is the
ingredient in Earl Grey tea. This came from the speaker that was showing
slides of wild flowers.

Thanks, Margaret and all. I would guess since Monarda is a native US plant
it would not be used in Earl Grey tea, which is presumably a British
concoction, and that instead Citrus auranticum is the ingredient.

Is this a situation where there is some confusion among herb book writers
(perhaps due to many being British while others are American), so that
they actually are under the impression that they are one and the same? In
other words, should an alarm should go off when we read the word BERGAMOT?

With the understanding that they are completely different, do any of you
USE either of these herbs or essential oils, or whatever they are? If so,
for what?

Bobbi

Bobbie, I don't think anyone adequately answered your question. Because of
its aroma, Monarda is also called bergamot. Orange bergamot, the source of
bergamot oil, is Citrus aurantium. Ready for more complication? There's
also a mint that's called orange bergamot mint, presumably because of its
aroma. Bergamot is an ingredient in Earl Grey breakfast tea, I think, but
I don't know which one they use. Margaret L

No; the Monardas are in the Lamiaceae, the Bergamot orange is in the Rutaceae.

One grows in more or less temperate climates, the other is almost subtropical.

(I can grow several species of Monardas outdoors, up here in the frozen north. I
can't even think of growing any citrus, unless I have a large greenhouse that's
warm in winter, too.)

> Any correlation at all?

You'll find the same scent in bergamot orange and a few of the Monardas.

> Can one be substituted for the other?

As a scent, perhaps. As a herb? Naaah. Monardas can be used more or less like
your strongest thyme; ie. they help against nausea, they "heat you up", they
make a nice tea, they make you sweat, they help your digestion. Citrus fruit, if
you use the peel, are more or less aromatic bitters (help the digestion); the
fruit flesh is more cooling to the digestion, and you eat'em for their vitamins
and for the taste, not for anything else.

> Or are they two entirely different things?

More or less, yes.

Cheers
Henriette

Can some of you knowledgeable folks enlighten me as to bergamot. I've
looked it up in various herb books I have, and in some what they call
bergamot is Monarda, wild bergamot, Oswego tea, or what I've always called
Bee Balm--a native US plant. In others, they mean bergamot, a type of
orange, or so they say. Is there any relationship between the two? Any
correlation at all? Can one be substituted for the other? Or are they two
entirely different things?

I recently bought some tea cookies flavored with lemon and bergamot which
I found quite tantalizing. Has anyone else tried these? Now I have bought
some bergamot oil, which evidently is from the orange-type fruit. Can I
use this oil in cooking? I'd like to try making my own lemon and bergamot
cookies. The smell of the oil is definitely the same as what is in the
cookies. It's quite distinctive. I must say that I have not used Bee Balm
for much, but grow it and know that it does have a minty smell but don't
think it is much like the bergamot oil I just bought.

Puzzled as to why such different things have the same name.

you steep lavender like you would tea,
1 c. to approx. 3 c. water
Strain, allow to cool.
I added it to lemon aid.
I add 1/2 to one cup of sugar.
You can use Crystal light or pink lemon aid.
In the summer fresh lavender flowers froze in
ice cubes are a nice touch.
